Death Sentence for Property Tycoon in Vietnam - Can She Escape?
A Vietnamese court upheld the death penalty for property tycoon Truong My Lan in a multibillion-dollar fraud case involving Saigon Commercial Bank. However, she could avoid execution if she returns three quarters of the assets she embezzled, equivalent to $9 billion. Lan, who founded Van Thinh Phat, was found guilty of swindling $27 billion, causing damages equivalent to 6% of the country's 2023 GDP. She and dozens of defendants were arrested in a national corruption crackdown.
