Tragic Death of Child in Channel Crossing: France Urges Crackdown on People Smuggling
On Saturday, a child tragically died while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to the UK.
The interior minister, Bruno Retailleau, confirmed the death and stated that several people, including the child, had lost their lives in the crossing.
Retailleau emphasized the need to crack down on people smuggling groups, who he says profit from organizing these dangerous crossings.
The child was reportedly trampled to death on board an overcrowded boat, with another person injured and airlifted to a nearby hospital.
Despite efforts to stop people from taking to the water, thousands attempt unauthorized crossings each year, putting their lives at risk.
