Climate Activists Jailed for Vandalizing Van Gogh's Sunflowers
Two Just Stop Oil activists, Phoebe Plummer and Anna Holland, were sentenced to two years and 20 months in jail, respectively, for vandalizing Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers painting at the National Gallery in London. The pair caused £10,000 worth of damage to the painting's frame after throwing soup over it and gluing their hands to the wall beneath it. The judge expressed concern that the painting could have been seriously damaged or even destroyed. The activists claimed they were drawing attention to the cost-of-living crisis and the impact of fossil fuels on the planet. Since then, three more activists have been arrested for throwing soup over two Van Gogh paintings at the National Gallery.
