Venezuela's Opposition Leader Maria Corina Machado Arrested on Swearing-In Eve of President Nicolas Maduro
Maria Corina Machado, Venezuela's opposition leader, was arrested in Caracas on Thursday while leaving a protest march against President Nicolas Maduro being sworn in for a third term. Machado, who had been in hiding since the contested July 2024 elections, made her first public appearance in months. The opposition was holding a series of eleventh-hour protests around Venezuela on the eve of Maduro's swearing-in, scheduled for Friday. The arrest has sparked condemnation from Spain, the European Parliament, the US, and others, who recognize Gonzalez as the rightful election winner and president-elect.
