Congo is facing a deadly mpox outbreak, with over 30,000 cases and 988 deaths reported so far this year. The majority of the deaths have been children under five. The country has launched a vaccination campaign, but is still waiting for millions of vaccine doses from France, Japan, and the US. The goal is to target priority groups, such as those with existing health conditions and medical workers. Japan has promised to send three million doses of a vaccine approved for use on both adults and children. The World Health Organization has approved the use of the first diagnostic test for mpox, which allows for the detection of the virus from swabs taken from human lesions. Congo has been in talks to secure further supplies of this vaccine for children.
