Gold Watch from Titanic Rescue Captain Sells for Record-Breaking £1.56m
A gold pocket watch given to the captain of a ship that helped rescue Titanic passengers has sold for a record-breaking £1.56m ($2m). Captain Arthur Rostron's 18-carat Tiffany & Co. watch was gifted by three widows of high-profile businessmen who died in the disaster. The watch was presented to Captain Rostron in gratitude for his bravery in changing the course of his ship to save 700 passengers. This beats the previous record set by another gold pocket watch recovered from the richest man on the ship, John Jacob Astor, which sold for £1.175m ($1.5m) in April. The watch was sold to a private collector in the US by auctioneers Henry Aldridge and Son in Wiltshire, UK.
