Brown Bear Wins Fat Bear Contest After Losing Cub to Contestant
A brown bear named Grazer has won the Fat Bear Contest at Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve for the second year in a row. Grazer beat out Chunk, a male bear who killed her cub earlier this summer. The contest is a celebration of success, with fans casting votes for their favorite chunky competitor who best exemplifies winter preparedness by the fat they have accumulated over the summer. Grazer has conspicuously blond ears and a long, straight muzzle, while Chunk is perhaps the largest bear on the river with narrow-set eyes and a distinctive scar across his muzzle. The annual contest is a way to celebrate the resiliency of the 2,200 brown bears that live in the preserve on the Alaska Peninsula. In a shocking twist, Grazer beat Chunk by more than 40,000 votes!
